How I can get a book published?

I write poetry and stories for children. Also I have an art studio at home and oil paintings, crafts, sewing. I do not know how to make money with these talents. It has always been nothing more than a hobby, but I try to do something extra money with it instead of just giving my work as a gift all the time. I have two small children at home and I have 40 now! I feel my time flies! I do not know where to start. I have to carry an extra income at home. Most publishers have new authors. If I found one that was how I can present my work?
