How do I prepare for painting wood crafts?

I bought some bird houses some wood (unpainted) I have the intention decorate with acrylic craft paints for Christmas gifts. The only thing is I'm not sure whether or not I need to prime before applying the aviaries craft paint. ¿I can give a plain coat of white acrylic craft, or should I use something else? Suggestions for the types of products and brands would appreciated. I have an AC Moore and Jo-Ann Fabrics near where I live, so it determines the availability of the brand.

To obtain the smoothest finish, sand the aviaries before and after priming with acrylic craft paint white. Always remember to clean up the pieces after sanding and before painting. I is usually works best for me if the paint in light colors to dark colors. I will also use a pair of brushes of different sizes of paint to work on anything that I am using more than one color on. This way I can match the brush size with the amount of space that needs to be painted a certain color. The smaller or more intricate space finer brush and vise versa.
