Easy to Craft Fashion Jewelry

Fashion jewelry, the first mass produced line of jewelry every, was introduced in the 1930s.  The goal of this style of jewelry was to allow every woman to purchase inexpensive items that matched the current dress and then dispose of the pieces when the styles changed.

Some of this early costume jewelry was beautiful and fun, and is still prized by collectors today.  Much of it succumbed to its destiny and was tossed as it broke easily and lost stones.  Today, you can create your own fashion jewelry from the comfort of your couch, with great ease.

How to Design your Fashion Jewelry

Take a look at the outfit you want to match.  What is the underlying color scheme?  Do you want to make something that contrasts and stands out or something that blends smoothly with your look? Let's design a necklace.

Hmm, look, there is a really nice, mock Victorian heart shaped locket.  It will hold two pictures of the kids.  That looks good.  All that is left is to click the order button.

What happens next?

Once you have designed your jewelry exactly the way you want it, the company will have someone pull the needed pieces and hand craft your necklace.  What you saw on your screen when you placed your order is exactly what will show up in the mail.  It can't be any simpler.

There is a tremendous advantage to being able to create the exact piece of jewelry you want.  Whether you need something special for a family function, a gift for a friend, or matching items for a mother/daughter pair or a set of best friends, you can design something unique.  It only takes a few minutes to scroll through your options and get the hang of designing jewelry in this manner.

If you aren't sure that what you created is exactly what you wanted, save it and come back to your project later.  You can add, subtract, and alter your designs as often as you want because the whole project is impermanent until you hit that "buy" button and make your payment.  You can't do that at the bead store!  Once you have put something together you are stuck with it, even if it doesn't look quite right.

Perhaps something that many commercial jewelry designers forget when they mass produce costume jewelry to send to your local mega-mart is that just because you are searching for something more casual, doesn't mean you want it to be made from cheap materials.

How many times have you heard of mass manufactured jewelry being recalled because it was poorly made or made from toxic materials?  If you design your own jewelry from sterling silver, you know it is safe as well as unique.
