Fun Flower Crafts for Tweens

Before the summer ends here are some great flower crafts for tweens.  These simple and inxpensive flower craft ideas are ones you can do with your tweens, or you can provide them with the materials and let them work on it on their own. Either way you'll be getting the last great bit of flower fun from the summer. 

  1. Create homemade clothing sachets  – here's a simple idea to make cheap sachets for your tween’s closet or even as special homemade gifts.  Pick fragrant summer blooms and herbs like lavender. One you have your flowers selects, strip off the blooms and dry them   You can lay them on newspaper or on a mesh drying rack - make sure your weigh them down so they won't fly away in a breeze After the flowers have dried , place them into a small, airy fabric bag and you have homemade potpourri sachets.  Mesh bags can often be found online or at Craft Stores, or you can make your own out of old nylon stockings. 
  2. Decorate a t-shirt – you and your tween can create a cool shirt with this simple ideas .  Gather your favortie flowers to create your design Then take a wooden chopping block and cover with three layers of paper towel.  Next take the piece of fabric you want the design on – whether it’s a white t-shirt or just a nice white cloth and place it on top of the chopping block and paper towels.  Place the flowers and herbs on the t-shirt in the desired design and then gently place another piece of paper towel over it.   Take a hammer and pound out the design so that the plants; colors transfer to the cloth .  When this is competed , lift off the top layer of paper towel and the flowers and use a hot iron for about 60 seconds to set the colorful design on to the fabric .
  3. Create a flower memory book – you don’t need a flower press to create your own memory scrapbook of flowers.   Consider collecting flowers from all the great summer hikes, walks and trips.  Then press them and put them in a scrapbook , adding pictures and details about where they were found to create a wonderful memory book .  To press flowers, follow these simple steps. 

-          Pick the flowers you want to press along with a piece of cardboard, some newspaper and white tissue paper

-          lay the flowers on the cardboard and then layer on the tissue paper, the newspaper and another piece of cardboard. 

-          Weight heavy objects like books and bricks on top of the flowers and cardboard and leave for 2-4 weeks before removing

After the 2-4 weeks you should have pretty, dry flowers that will last as long as your memories.
