Bisque porcelain or porcelain biscuit, takes its name from its first firing or initial where fragile porcelain could be shut down as a cookie. Bisque porcelain is also known as "cookies consumption" items without glazing and more popularly as the "Parian" consumer.

The production of a biscuit porcelain figure, or base of the lamp starts with the eye of the designer, who, with sketchbook and pencil, outline the design idea. This idea, of course, framed by the contemporary styles of the time.

Bisque porcelain, like all complex forms of ceramics are slip cast or molded. Slip is the liquid mixture, which composed of brick clay is mixed with water to a semi creamy liquid that literally poured into preformed plaster of Paris molds to take shape.

Slip is the raw material behind the beautiful porcelain we see. This porcelain liquid is a mixture of kaolin, feldspar and finely ground stone. Kaolin is natural, clay very thin with a high percentage of silicate. Feldspar is a crystalline mineral, also containing high levels of silicate and finely ground stone is a hard quartz.

This only shows the main content of this mixture of porcelain, which was refined and developed over hundreds of years. The chemistry is much more complex with potassium, sodium and calcium contributes to the finished product.

Both ceramic and porcelain are made by pouring the fall in plaster molds, plaster absorbs water from the blade, causing a final layer to form, the surplus is then poured off.

It is interesting to note that the tradition of casting plaster slip Paris, preshaped mold is not new, the process that was introduced in England in about 1745, allegedly by a potter named Ralph Daniels Cobridge.

When remaining leaf has become hard cheese, or sometimes referred to as "leather hard", the plaster molds are removed and the cast assembled to form slip produce the desired design.
