The colonial era
Tigre's history dates back to a port on the Rio Las Conchas, which resulted in the village of Las Conchas. The port was used by ships sailing the Parana River and Paraguay and also for those who carried timber, coal and firewood in the Delta to Buenos Aires. River Las Conchas (name of the shell debris was abundant in the river bed) is now called Reconquista and runs along the street Liniers. The village grew around the port with increasing its strategic importance, particularly since the eighteenth century. In 1780 the church had already been built and the parishwas established at that time. Many stands the river floods and torrential rains hit the area. One of the first historically recorded catastrophes occurred in early June 1805 when Las Conchas village was devastated nearly a strong storm that caused the flooding of the river, its banks. Most people moved to the nearby highlands where founded the town of San Fernando, and a canal was built to be used as a new port. The village was deserted and almost completely abandoned. In August of 1820 was destroyed by a tornado, once again. The flood caught the harbor entrance. At the same time, the flow of water out through a small stream called Tigre, causing enlargement of bed and turn it into a river. The port was moved to its present location by the Tigre River, and in time the town was called Tigre.
Promotion Delta Paraná River in the nineteenth century
The offer of boats on the Tigre, the most convenient access to many points along the delta.
During the second half of the nineteenth century The area became economically and socially important, mainly due to Domingo F. Sarmiento, president of Argentina from 1868 to 1872. Sarmiento stressed the favorable development potential of the islands and fought for the rights of settlers to own the land they were working. Your home on the island has been converted into a museum that is on the bank of the river that bears his name. In those decades the country experienced substantial immigration process and many of those immigrants settled in the islands. The rail line to San Fernando, who arrived in 1863 and came to Tigre in 1865, improving communications with Buenos Aires and facilitated trade in products of Delta, basically fresh fruits and dairy products such as fruit juices, jams and cider. Similarly, the train allowed visits a day by the inhabitants of the city. This favored the creation of places to spend the day in the islands, called recess, and sparked interest in rowing along the calm waters.
Island residents
The first inhabitants of the islands were indigenous groups called guarana. In colonial times there was no population stable, but nomadic hunters or wood and applicants for coal. Occasionally, it was also the site of a hidden contraband. For now, Sarmiento encouraged development, new settlers arrived in the islands to live in the commercial exploitation of their products. The construction materials of the islands includes sun-dried bricks, cane, straw and wood. The simple huts made of these materials were followed by houses made entirely of wood.
Delta economy
Moros in the Delta, Tigre.
The first inhabitants lived primarily by hunting and fishing small coconut palm (Cocos australis). A few tribes planted corn and peanuts, and fruit trees grew. In colonial times the area supplied Buenos Aires with wood and coal. Later, the fruit prevailed until 1940.That year, a river rising spoiled most of the plants and caused crisis a massive outflow of a large proportion of the population. The emergence of new markets for fruit in other parts of the country prevented the recovery of the resource economy traditional. Other products in the region are wicker baskets or furniture. The cultivation of wicker (Salix sp), which is native to Europe and Asiancold and temperate regions, was proposed by Sarmiento, and that can withstand flooding. Another plant that is adapted to the floodplain is New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax), which was industrialized from 1925 and is used in containers, burlap, rope, wire, runners and mats. In the late twentieth century, competition from synthetic fibers New Zealand flax plantations uneconomic. Fishing and otter pup are other economic activities are no longer attractive. The evolution of the area are beekeeping, camellia and azalea nursery, crafts and wood. In the Market Delta Products Tigre, Delta various products sold.

Amusement Park Costa, Tigre.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century islanders realized his identity. They shared common interests and problems Delta magazine, founded in 1933 by a Hungarian immigrant named Sandor Mikler. At that time 20,000 people lived on the islands and the population peaked at 40,000 in subsequent years. In 1936, local producers and entrepreneurs founded an association called "Producers Council Isle" (island board of producers) and next year October 31 was declared to be "day of the islanders." The celebration takes place every year with the assistance of local authorities and neighbors. There was an intense social activity in the islands with weekly meetings at the many clubs in the area. Weddings were held both in the coastal towns, such as Bell or San Fernando, or the chapels of the island. To provide religious services in the islands, a floating church for navigation along the rivers was created. Since the service was quite expensive to be suspended 1952. The bell is now on display at the Police Station and Paraná de las Palmas Carapachay, as a reminder of those days. A boat procession was made for the first time in 1923. Even today, this feast is celebrated on December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception. The procession is headed by the image of the Virgin Mary on board a Coast Guard boat from Argentina "(national coast guard) and is followed by all kinds of boats, large and small, commercial and private all dressed for the occasion. A large number of spectators applauding the progress of the banks of the Luján River.
Tigre's golden years
Rowing Club Argentino Tigre.
Rowing was one of the main attractions that fueled the boom in the area. rowing practice had begun in the south of Buenos Aires and was gradually transferred to Lujn river because of the tranquility and beauty. President Sarmiento attended the first race held on December 8, 1873. The event was so successful that clubs Rowing Tigre moved to existing and new ones were founded by members of the various foreign communities residing in Buenos Aires. Yachting began practicing in 1883, when the "Yacht Club Argentino, with headquarters later moved to San Fernando, was founded, and then the" Tigre Sailing Club. " El Tigre Hotel, Opened in 1890 on the banks of the Luján River, and beside it the Tigre Club opened in 1912. These elegant buildings became meeting places for the elite office of the "Belle poker." The hotel was demolished in 1940, but the Club continues today and has been declared National Historic Monument.
