Is it illegal to copy something from a magazine then sell?

I'm thinking about a variety of crafts to sell at fairs and craft shows. I can get most of my ideas from magazines, such as movement patterns furnishings ideas etc. My question is is it illegal to take the idea of the book then sell it? I was to make many copies of these to sell and do not want to come back and bite me in the know why. Also, if anyone has experience in these fairs and exhibitions please share. I would selling stained glass, small furniture (shelves cabinets small stool) and random decorative pieces of wood. I like doing all this and want to do more than just a hobby for Question # 2 for anyone who knows ... do these things are sold at these shows? Thank you very much in advance.
